jweber@campcountynow. com Five area firefighters were honored last week as Pittsburg Fire and Rescue held its annual Christmas awards banquet. Wesley Kizer was named Firefighter of the Year for the second year in a row. Mark Davis also received special recognition with the Fire Chief’s Award. He is only the third firefighter ever to receive the honor. Tim Reynolds was recognized for 30 years of service,

Christopher Osthoff for 10 years of service and Jerry Goforth for five years. “A fire department is not a one-person organization, it is a team and we all have to work together to get the job done. We have a great team here that works well together and it is a pleasure to be around them every day,” Carl Cravey, Fire Chief, said. Mr. Kizer has worked as a volunteer fireman for more than two years and recently graduated

Whether its chestnuts roasting on an open fire, walking in a winter wonderland or putting cookies out for the big man in red, Christmas time is right around the corner and with this holiday, comes holiday traditions many families and cultures practice over the years. Christmas time and traditions vary all around the world. In Peru, the most important element of Christmas is “Noche Buena”. According to a website of how Christmas is celebrated in different cultures, Noche Buena occurs on Christmas Eve, making that night the most important of the Christmas celebration. Families will gather late that night and have a traditional dinner including a whole turkey with applesauce. Traditional dinners were found to be a common practice on Christmas within the city of Pittsburg as well. From the traditional Christmas dinner with dressing and ham, tamales, gumbo or even cantaloupe and gravy, residents in Pittsburg have their dinners, lunches and breakfast as a tradition for Christmas. “My family always has a big Christmas breakfast in the morning for Christmas and we also have enchiladas every year,” Rebakah Trimble said. In France stockings are not hung by the chimney with care. Instead, children place their shoes in front the fireplace so that Father Christ-

Commissioners’ put aside money to fix roads, City Council appoints Cook to appraisal district By Lauren Shortnacy

lshortnacy@campcountynow.com The Commissioners’ Court had their regular meeting Monday, Dec. 9 at 8:30 a.m. in the county courtroom. Among the members, the agenda consisted of seven points. First the court considered the approval of prior Commissioners Court minutes. After the minutes were approved and the reports of elected officials were discussed, the Court considered the approval of the Camp County holidays for the calendar year of 2014. It was confirmed that the Pioneer Days for 2014 would be dropped as well

as Columbus Day, but there would be three holiday days for Christmas the same as this year due to not very much court activity. Along with the holiday calendar, the Court also considered the approval of Order Designating Day of the Week, on which Commissioners‘ Court would convene in regular term for the calendar year of 2014. Like the Holidays, the meeting was kept the same as this year, in which the Court would meet on every second Monday of each month. The next point on the agenda was to consider the approval of appointment of Camp County representative to the Camp Central Appraisal District Board of Directors. Gayle Burns

was nominated and re-elected for the position. The Court also considered the request from Marlin Leasing for abatement of penalty and interest due on 2012 taxes on CCAD PID#9923598, in which the Court agreed to deny the request. The final point that the Court discussed was to discuss and take possible action to create a County Energy Transportation Reinvestment Zone (CETRZ) and proceed with applications for the Texas Department of Transportation County Energy Transportation Infrastructure Fund Grant. The court agreed to take action and start the CETRZ process.

ty tips for your home this holiday season. • Use only Christmas lights and extension cords that are safety-certified by a recognized testing agency such as Underwriters Laboratory (UL). Check your tree lights and outdoor lights for damage each year before you use them. Discard lights with frayed wires, loose connections and broken or cracked sockets. • Follow the manufacturer’s instructions for using tree lights. • Never attach elec-

tric lights to metal trees. A malfunction could lead to a dangerous, perhaps fatal, shock to anyone touching any part of the tree. Instead, use colored flood lights to give a safer and more beautiful illumination. • Select lights appropriately and never use indoor lights outside because they are not designed to be waterproofed and could short circuit. Outdoor lights, on the other hand, are usually hotter than indoor and could pose a hazard if placed on a tree.

Don’t overload • wall outlets or extension cords. Connect lights to power strips that have several outlets and a built-in circuit breaker. Never run electrical cords under carpets or rugs where daily walking and wear could cause fraying and overheating. • When you leave the house or go to bed, be sure all lights are turned off. Disconnect lights by pulling the plug, not by yanking on the cord. • Remind children never to touch lights or outlets.

Continued from page 1 win this award, again,” Cravey said. The repeat honor came as somewhat of a surprise to Kizer. “I was never expecting to win it last year and I was even more surprised when I won it again this year. I really don’t feel like I deserve it because we all work so hard and do so much for the department. What can I say? It is a real honor,” Kizer said. “This award isn’t about to getting out and going to the calls when they happen, it is about doing whatever needs to be done, no matter what.” Davis, a full-time fire-

fighter, joined Pittsburg Fire and Rescue in 2010. He began his career in Mount Pleasant in 2004 before completing the NTCC Fire Academy in 2006. He noted that one of his favorite parts of the job is working out in the community raising fire safety awareness. “I have always enjoyed being able to help the public. I have always been interested in helping people and doing whatever I can as far as public service goes. I don’t remember it, but my mom tells me all the time that I would tell her I wanted to grow up to be a fireman when I was a little kid,” Davis

said. According to Cravey, The Fire Chief’s Award has only been given to a handful of recipients and is reserved for those who go above and beyond in their service to their community. “Sometimes we have an individual who can always be relied upon to get things done. Mark is there whenever I need him and he is always willing and eager to help out. There are several others that I rely on, but Mark stood out and I felt that he needed to be recognized for what he does for us and for this county,” Cravey said.

-mas, “Pere Nole,” can fill them with small gifts and candy. Also popular in France is Midnight Mass. On Christmas Eve, families will partake in a late supper called “Le Reveillon”. Within Pittsburg, families have caroled around their neighborhoods or event attended the candlelight services for Christmas. Two ladies at Laura DeWoody Jewelers downtown shared some of their family traditions that happen for them on their Christmases. “Our family would always used to carol around our neighborhood for Christmas with a couple of my neighbors,” Leigh Ann Kingston said. “Along with caroling, we would also decorate Christmas cookies and take them to neighbor houses.” “My family attends the candlelight services for

Christmas,” Laura Dewoody Ottmer said. “Attending that service is always such a blessing for our Christmas.” In Italy a majority of the Italian families’ homes display a Nativity Scene during the holidays as well as all the churches. But unlike most Christmases within the U.S., children in France do not receive gifts until the night before Epiphnay, which is Jan. 5, and the gifts are not brought by the big man in red. Instead, the children receive their Christmas gifts from the kind witch for Christmas. Other family traditions can also include celebrating Santa even after the children have grown up, opening at least one or two gifts on Christmas Eve before the big celebration the next day or in Main Street Manager’s Jenny Rowan case, a small talent show for the family to enjoy. “My whole mom’s side of the family gets together at my house Christmas Eve morning and has a large lunch together, after eating we gather around in a circle, all 25 of us, and sing Christmas carols while my uncle plays the guitar and we use our keys as bells,” Rowan said. “All the kids and those new to the family perform talents; it’s kind of an initiation.” Along with the “initiation” Rowan said her grandfather will also read the story of Christmas from the family bible, which can be found in Matthew, and then the family sings happy birthday to

Jesus before having a white elephant trade, which always ends up in a gift wrapping war. “We throw balls of gift wrap at each other,” Rowan said. “It’s a blast and you can always count on something unexpected and goofy happening!” Some culture practices have been brought over into the city of Pittsburg and can be shared within the community. Elance Roberts from Max and Zoe’s bring her German heritage out for the town of Pittsburg to enjoy when they shop during the holidays in the store. “I always serve wassail every year in my store,” Roberts said. “Since I am from German decent, this is a big thing in my family that we enjoy.” Wassail is hot mulled punch that is often associated with Yuletide. Historically, the drink was a mulled cider made with sugar, cinnamon, ginger, and nutmeg and topped with slices of toast. Modern recipes begin with a base of wine, fruit juice, or mulled ale, sometimes with brandy or sherry added. Apples or oranges are often added to the mix. Whether it is putting up a tree every year, still celebrating Santa even after your childhood years have long come and gone, celebrating the birth of a Savior or feasting on a family traditional dish for dinner, Christmas traditions will continue to take place on this festive holiday between families and friends all over the world.

Dallas fans aren’t so jolly; NFL coach for Longhorns? We are told, ‘Tis the season to be jolly’, and that`s probably true unless you are a Dallas Cowboys football fan. In a season of mediocrity, the last two weeks have been devastating to say the least. Whether it was the Chicago game where a back-up quarterback led his team on seven consecutive scoring drives to open the game, or the Green Bay game where another back-up quarterback lead his team back from a 23-point deficit by scoring five touchdowns in the second half, it is apparent this team is floundering. It would be easy

to just blame the worst defense in the National Football League, but to blame them I would need to know all of their names and a lot of them haven`t been around long enough for me to learn them yet. Sean Lee, the outstanding middle linebacker, is injured yet again as well is DeMarcus Ware and his well-documented leg problems. Let’s pick on the offense for a while. Demarco Murray has averaged about five and a half yards a carry this year and almost eight yards a carry in the last two games. That is excellent and a good indication of

how well the offensive line is doing. In fact, if Murray would have had about ten more carries in the third quarter of the Green Bay game, Dallas would have won by ten points. Then you have Tony Romo, the lightning rod. All in all he has had a better-than-average year. Has he thrown some inopportune interceptions? Yes, but if you score forty-eight points or thirty-six points you shouldn’t have to be trying to win the game on the final drive. It should already be over. Where the real problem lies is in the coaching staff and general manager. This

One Man’s Opinion by Roy Knox last game was simple, unless there were more than eight players in the defensive box, there should have been a running play called. It is just systematic of the poor play calling all year. Poor coaching and even poorer drafting has gotten us where we are today. The Cowboys have a 7-7 record and I expect them to lose the next two games. At least I hope Santa is good to me. • Now that Mack Brown has resigned, the

big question is who is going to replace him? You can expect a big name, maybe even a present or past NFL coach. Money isn’t a problem, Texas is willing to play for the right coach. • I have been shopping in town and out. Members of the Lions Club donated over $1000 to the Pittsburg Nursing Center and Southern Wind Assisted Living center for this holiday season.

Lions Club donates for holidays

The season of giving is here and the Lions Club tapped into that spirit when they recently donated over $1000 between the Pittsburg Nursing Center and Assisted Living. Jennifer Parrish, Administrator of the Pittsburg Nursing Center and a new member of the Lions Club, recommended the idea of donating to the elderly this holiday season. “I thought it would be a wonderful idea for the residents who are without family or loved ones during the holiday season. It would be a way to make them feel special and remembered for Christmas.” Six hundred and fifty dollars was donated to the Pittsburg Nursing Center, and with that

donation, Parrish said the staff will go out and Christmas shop locally for the residents. “We had our residents write a letter to Santa of what they might want for Christmas,” Parrish said. “We will actually have Santa deliver those gifts to our residents a special Christmas party.” Executive Director of the Pittsburg Chamber of Commerce and Lion Club member, Allen Weatherford said when the suggestion to give to Camp County’s elderly was, the Lion Club felt it was an excellent choice. “This is the first time we have made this type of gift to our local Centers.” Mr. Weatherford said. “Giving and remembering our elders is important every day of the year.”

Mr. Weatherford said this time of the year; the club knows there are residents who are without family or friends to share the joy of Christmas. “Without this generation of folks, our community and country would not be what it is,” Mr. Weatherford said. “We just re affirm to them that we appreciate their lives and what they have done for us.” Along with the gifts, Parrish also writes each resident a Christmas card. She wants to make sure their holidays are special. “We all like to be remembered,” Parrish said. “Times are tough, so whenever we have a chance to bring some joy in this world we need to take it.”

Pirates pick up wins over DeKalb, Rains By Jeremy Weber

jweber@campcountynow.com Strong first and third quarter performances helped the Pirates pick up wins in their last two games as Pittsburg downed both DeKalb and Rains. A pressing defense, forced turnovers and easy baskets have helped the Pirates jump out to big early-game leads as Pittsburg combined to outscore Rains and DeKalb 43-6 in first-quarter action. “When we are able to get into our pressing game and keep the tempo the way we want it, then we are able to control the game,” head coach J.B. Littlejohn said. “That’s the way we want to play.” The Pirates had the tempo working in their favor in the opening quarter against DeKalb last Tuesday as Pittsburg used its pressing defense to build a 22-2 lead after eight minutes of play. Pirate foul trouble sent the Bears to the foul line several times in the second frame as DeKalb was able to outscore the Pirates 13-10 in the frame to cut the Pittsburg lead to 32-15 at the half. “We have to learn to be aggressive without fouling,” Littlejohn said. “Things can start to bog down for us in the second and fourth quarters when the fouls start to pile up. When we have to pull back on our press, it puts pressure on our offense to produce in the half court. We are a much better team when we are forcing turnovers and getting into the open court.” Pittsburg turned up the pressure again in the third quarter, outscoring DeKalb 23-7 to earn a 55-22 lead heading into the final eight minutes, where the Pirates cruised to a 64-27 victory. Sir Charles Perkins led the Pirates with 16 points in the win while Markevious Traylor scored seven, E.J. Hill had six points, Levi Leonard scored five, D.J. Hughes, Robert Hollins and Jakevion Traylor each scored four and Justin Zepeda, Triston Payne and D.J. Porter all scored two points. The Pirates used the same recipe to build another commanding first-quarter lead against Rains Friday, outscoring the Wildcats 21-4 in the opening eight minutes of play. The offense bogged down for the Pirates in the second quarter as fouls mounted and the

Rains scored 17 in the quarter to cut the Pittsburg lead to 27-21 at the half. “Foul trouble when we are in our press can really hurt us,” Littlejohn said. “It puts the other team in the bonus and makes us stop pressing. It’s a double whammy.” Pittsburg used its defense to build a 42-28 lead heading into the fourth quarter, where the Pirates held off the Wildcats to pick up a 52-41 win.

Jakevion Traylor led the Pirates with 10 points in the win while Porter scored eight, Leonard and Markevious Traylor each scored seven, Perkins had six points, Payne scored five, Zepeda and Hollins each had four points and Smith scored one. “I feel like when we can force the tempo and keep teams off the foul line, then we dominate,” Littlejohn said about the wins. “These kids are not only learning how to play the game, they are also learning how to win. Right now, any win is good for us and it was great to get these two.”

Twelve Pirates named to All-District football team By Jeremy Weber

jweber@campcountynow.com The Pittsburg Pirates football team has 12 players recognized in the District 13-3A All-District team for 2013. Place kicker Daniel Silva earned first-team offensive honors after making five of his seven field goal attempts this season. Silva made four of his five attempts from inside the 30-yard-line and was one of two from beyond the 30-yard mark, with a season long of 30 yards. Silva was also 22 of 24 on extra point attempts in 2013. The Pirates had three players named to the second team offense, including running back Carl Leonard, wide receiver Markeith Thompson and tackle Jake Smith. Leonard ran for a total of 689 yards and four touchdowns this season, including nine runs of 20 or more yards. He had a season long run of 40 yards. Leonard averaged 5.65 yards per carry in 2013. Thompson was the second leading receiver on the team this season with 20 catches for 234 yards and one touchdown. He had a season long catch of 59 yards and averaged 11.6 yards per catch. Linebacker Tre Nelms picked up second team defensive honors. He led the team in tackles with 91, including three sacks. Nelms also recovered four fumbles, including one that was returned for a touchdown. Pirates receiving honorable mention

superlatives included: quarterback Garrett Truitt, running back Frezarian Harrison, wide receive/linebacker Sir Charles Perkins, guard Tilar Holloway, defensive lineman Ty Smith, and safety John Wayne Warrick. Truitt ended the season with 1,296 passing yards and 12 touchdowns. He also ran for 222 yards and four more scores. Harrison was third on the team in rushing with 389 yards. Perkins was fourth on the team in receiving with nine catches for 90 yards and was also second on the team with 50 tackles defensively. Smith was tied for fourth on the team in tackles with 38, including 4.5 sacks and a team high eight tackles for a loss. Warrick was also tied for fourth on the team with 38 tackles and one interception. Notably absent from the district superlatives list was the Pirate’s leading receiver Markevius Traylor, who caught 23 passes for 496 yards and five touchdowns on the season. This included 10 catches of 20 or more yards. Stats for offensive linemen, including Jake Smith and Tilar Holloway, were not available. Top district superlatives included District MVP, Davion Hall of Liberty-Eyleau; Offensive MVP, Quez Allen of Paris High; Defensive MVP, Bricky Reed of Paris High; Newcomer of the Year, Tristan Allen of Atlanta; and Special Teams Player of the Year, Jordan Williams of Paris High.

Lady Pirates gain needed experience at tourney By Jeremy Weber

jweber@campcountynow.com The Lady Pirates faced some tough competition and picked up some valuable experience last week as they were in action at the Great East Texas Shootout tournament in Brownsboro. While Pittsburg finished 1-2 at the tournament, head coach John Chatham said it was all worth it. “This was a big-time tournament for us,” he said. “There were some really good teams there and playing against those teams can only make you better. The two games we lost are games we should have lost. Those teams were just better than us. We came here to play tough competition and get better and that is exactly what we did.” A significant size difference was too much for the Lady Pirates to overcome in their opening game of the tournament as they fell to Longview, 51-36. Pittsburg trailed 15-10 after eight minutes of play but played the Lady Lobos even in the second quarter and trailed 26-19 at the half. The third quarter was the difference as Longview Gazette Photo by Jeremy Weber outscored the Lady Pirates 23-7 to grab Denasia Watson scored 28 points against Athens at the Brownsboro Tournament last a commanding lead. Pittsburg held the Lady Lobos to just two points in the week as Pittsburg downed the Lady Hornets, 68-37. final period but the Lady Pirates could not complete the comeback as they fell by 15. Justonni Farmer led the Lady Pirates in the loss with 13 points while D’Maya Hashaway scored six, Denasia Watson had five points, Jasmine Walker and Shaundrea Rhymed each scored four, Ayanna Palmer had three points and Brilie Cummings scored one. A breakout, 28-point performance by Watson helped lead the Lady Pirates to victory in their next game as they defeated Athens, 68-37. “Denasia was finally able to break through for us against Athens,” Chatham said. “She is usually the best player in the gm and she finally played like it in this one.” Employing a full-court press throughout the game, the Lady Pirates fought Athens to a tie after one quarter of play and then outscored the Lady Hornets 18-8 in the second quarter to build a 31-21 halftime advantage. Pittsburg continued to press and build its lead in the second half as the Lady Pirates pulled away to win by 31. “Our pressing finally caught up to them after a while,” Chatham said. “Athens is not a bad team at all. We were just in better shape.” Watson’s 28 led the way for Pittsburg in the win while Hashaway added 11,

Palmer scored nine, Farmer had six points, Rhymes scored four and Genesis Lopez, Cummings and Kaycee Parker each scored two. The Lady Pirates let an opportunity slip away in their next contest as comeback bid fell just short against Whitehouse in a 48-38 loss. After trailing the entire contest, the Lady Pirates cut the Whitehouse lead to 41-38 with 1:28 to play. The Lady Pirates were on the foul line with a chance to cut into the lead further, but a miss free throw led a three-point play by Whitehouse that put the game out of reach for Pittsburg. “Whitehouse was very good. They were better than us, but we played well and were in it at the end,” Chatham said. “We were two free throws from really making things interesting, but we didn’t quit. We showed a lot of character. Sometimes they just slip away.” The Lady Pirates trailed by 17 at the half before fighting their way back into the game but the team could not overcome a 7-15 performance at the free throw line. Watson led the Lady Pirates with 12 points in the loss while Palmer scored nine, Farmer had six, Lopez scored two, Walker had three and Rhymes and Hashaway each scored two.
