Thanksgiving Day, years ago when my children were young, wanting to give my wife more of a day of rest, I volunteered to cook the turkey. Being my true self, I decided to change things up a bit with a new stuffing recipe. From a page-worn, vintage Good House Keeping cookbook, I found an Apple Sausage Stuffing. And made an edit by adding chopped walnuts. The family loved it. The next year, our young children requested for me to cook Thanksgiving dinner again, provided I made the same stuffing. My wife enthusiastically voiced her support :¬) Every year since, that's been my role on Thanksgiving Day. 2023 included. It's a family tradition. I find great satisfaction in serving my family in this way... brought about by finding a winning stuffing recipe. There's a business lesson in this story... Are you making repeat sales? Are your clients requesting to renew with you? Are they wanting you involved in additional projects? The Renewal KPI. It's a clear indicator you have a winning recipe. Of course, that’s nonsense – normal life can, must, and does carry on, but the bustle and chaos always leave me feeling a bit too hectic. I want this time to be about candles and woodfires and cozy pajamas and hot drinks, but it usually ends up being cold car rides at a slightly uncomfortable speed because we're running late for something and lots of waiting in supermarket checkout lanes. I think an important reminder for this newsletter, therefore, is that November and December are not normal working months. Our whole society is shifting priorities, energy for work priorities is low across the board, and schedules are hectic and ever-changing. Don’t try and force this to be a season of high-productivity if that’s not the way the water is flowing. Instead, plan for the inevitable delays, days of inertia, and distractions. That way, when they happen, you can feel good about having anticipated them in your work goals, instead of being stressed about having one more thing to worry about. … Want more? £5 coffee breaks are actually part of my strategy now. And I know it gets a lot of flack. (Cue the ‘stop the daily coffee sprees and save’ wave). But you can make money on the side, with a coffee cup in hand. Here’s how: - change of scenery = space to process - space to process = creativity spike - creativity spike = content ideas - content ideas = posts and programs - posts and programs = conversation starters - conversation starters = community Etc etc,. Honestly, it’s turned out to be such a sweet retreat for me this past week. And it’s here to stay. Because ya gal has made headway in all aspects of biz in some way, shape or form.
